How to switch

If you already have solar panels with a smart meter, switching your export tariff is straightforward. Most suppliers let you apply online — you'll need your MPRN and your smart meter details.

If you're with the supplier already, the switch is typically a tariff change within the same account. If you're switching to a supplier you don't import from, you sign a separate export-only agreement — these are called "deemed" export contracts.

Fixed-rate tariffs (like Outgoing Octopus at 15p) pay the same rate year-round. Agile or variable tariffs (like Agile Outgoing) change every half hour based on wholesale prices, which means higher payments in winter afternoons but lower when the grid is awash with solar.

Why rates differ so much

The Smart Export Guarantee only requires suppliers to pay "more than zero" for exported electricity. Some offer premium rates (like OVO's 20p) to reward loyal customers or keep you on their import tariff. Others offer the bare minimum. There's no standard rate — the best deal changes every few months, so it pays to check.
