Privacy Policy

Home Energy Compare ("we", "us", "our") is the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. This page explains what we collect, why, how long we keep it, and the choices you have. It applies to homeenergycompare.co.uk and every calculator and guide on it.

We are independent. We are not an installer, and we do not build marketing lists. If anything below stops being true, you can hold us to it — see the contact details at the end of this page.

The short version

• The calculators work in your browser. Figures you type in — your bill, your postcode, your roof size — are stored on your own device (in your browser's local storage), not on our servers, unless you go on to request quotes.

• We only collect your name, email, phone number and property details if you choose to fill in the "get quotes" form.

• Those details go to a maximum of three vetted, MCS-certified installers so they can prepare a quote for you. We do not sell your details, and we do not add you to a marketing list.

• We do not currently use analytics or advertising cookies. If that changes (for example, if we add Google Analytics 4), we will update this page and ask for consent where the law requires it.

What we collect, and why

Calculator and tool inputs

Our solar, battery, heat pump, export tariff and grant tools ask for details like your postcode, monthly energy bill, roof size or property type so they can estimate a cost range for your home. These figures are processed in your browser and saved to your browser's local storage, purely so the tool remembers your answers if you come back to the page. They are not transmitted to, or stored on, our servers, and we cannot see them.

Clearing your browser's site data (or using a different browser or device) will clear these saved answers.

Quote requests

If you choose to request installer quotes, we ask for your postcode, what you're looking for (solar, battery, heat pump or a combination), some basic property details (property type, whether you own the home), and contact details (name, email, and optionally a phone number).

We collect this because it is what an installer needs to prepare a quote for your specific home, and because you have asked us to pass it on. We only do this when you actively submit the quote form, and the form makes clear what will happen to your details before you submit it.

Correspondence

If you email us — a correction, a question, a complaint — we keep that correspondence, along with your email address, so we can reply and keep a record of the conversation.

Who we share it with

When you request quotes, we share the details you provide with up to three vetted, MCS-certified installers who cover your postcode and the work you're asking about, so they can contact you directly with a quote. That is the only reason we share quote-request data with a third party.

We do not sell your data. We do not share it with data brokers, marketing companies, or anyone outside the installers you have asked us to introduce you to. Some of our guides carry clearly-marked affiliate links to third-party products or comparison services; clicking one may take you to a site with its own privacy policy, which we recommend you read, but we do not pass your details to those sites ourselves.

We may also share data with service providers who help us run the site (for example, website hosting or email delivery) under contracts that require them to protect it and use it only for the purpose we specify, and with authorities where we are legally required to.

Our legal basis for processing

Where we share your details with installers, we rely on your consent: you actively submit a form asking us to do this, and the form explains what will happen before you do. You can withdraw consent at any time by emailing us, though this cannot undo quotes already sent to installers.

Where we reply to correspondence or keep basic security and error logs to keep the site running safely, we rely on our legitimate interests in operating a functioning, secure website, balanced against your right to privacy.

Cookies and analytics

At the time of writing, this site does not set analytics, advertising or tracking cookies. The calculators' saved answers use your browser's local storage rather than a cookie, and are never read by us.

We may add privacy-conscious analytics in future, such as Google Analytics 4, to understand which guides and tools are useful and to fix problems. If we do, we will update this section, name the tool and what it collects, and show a cookie banner where consent is legally required before it runs.

How long we keep your data

Calculator inputs live only in your own browser's local storage, under your control, until you clear them.

Quote-request details are kept for as long as needed to complete the introduction and handle any follow-up (typically no more than 12 months), after which we delete or anonymise them, unless we are legally required to keep them for longer.

Correspondence is kept for as long as reasonably needed to resolve the matter and to maintain a record in case of a future dispute or complaint.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law, you have the right to:

  • ask us what personal data we hold about you and get a copy of it (access)
  • ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete data (rectification)
  • ask us to delete your data, for example if you withdraw consent (erasure)
  • ask us to restrict or object to certain processing
  • ask for your data in a portable format, where technically feasible
  • withdraw consent at any time, without affecting the lawfulness of anything already done

To use any of these rights, email us at the address below. We will respond within one month. If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk.

Children

This site is intended for UK homeowners and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the site changes — for example, if we add analytics or a new tool that collects different information. We will update the "last reviewed" date at the top of this page whenever we do, and material changes will be reflected here in plain language, not buried in legal text.
