Heat pump grants: current routes for England, Wales, Scotland and NI

Check the correct funding route for your property, including current Boiler Upgrade Scheme categories and the conditions of the temporary oil/LPG uplift.

The useful starting point

Start with the nation where the property is located. Funding rules and application routes differ, and approval should be checked before you commit to an installation.

England and Wales: Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Current GOV.UK guidance lists £7,500 for qualifying air-to-water or ground-source heat pumps, £2,500 for air-to-air heat pumps, and £5,000 for qualifying biomass boilers. These are separate categories, not amounts to add together.

Until March 2027, an additional £1,500 is available towards qualifying air-source or ground-source heat pumps where the home is heated by oil or LPG and has no mains gas connection. That can bring qualifying support to £9,000. The system, property and timing conditions still apply.

BUS is an England and Wales scheme. Owners apply through the installer process. Replacing an existing low-carbon heating system, most new builds and previously supported installations can fall outside the rules; check the official eligibility page for your situation.

Scotland: a separate grant and loan route

Home Energy Scotland’s grant and loan service has its own owner-occupier and measure requirements. Its published heating grant can reach £7,500, with a rural uplift where applicable and optional loan funding subject to the scheme’s terms.

Do not combine a Scottish offer with BUS in a model as though both apply to the same Scottish property. Funding must be available and a written offer obtained in accordance with the Scottish application process before work.

Household support and other nations

In England, Warm Homes: Local Grant is a council route for qualifying privately owned homes, with property efficiency and household eligibility conditions. The council assesses the improvements it can fund.

In Wales, Nest provides advice and support under its own rules. In Northern Ireland, use the nidirect directory for current schemes rather than assuming a Great Britain programme applies.

ECO4 has been extended to 31 December 2026. It is supplier-delivered support with programme requirements, not a universal grant for any requested heat pump. Availability and the measures offered must be checked with the delivery organisation.

Separate tax treatment from a grant

Qualifying installed energy-saving materials can receive temporary zero VAT treatment through 31 March 2027 under HMRC’s rules. That is not another cash grant. Ask the installer to show the full price, applicable VAT treatment and grant deduction separately.

Do not assume two public funding schemes can be stacked for the same work. Disclose previous support and ask the scheme operators to confirm whether a proposed combination is permitted.

Before paying a deposit

  • Confirm who applies and which approval must come before installation.
  • Check the exact heat-pump category and eligible property.
  • Declare previous public funding for the same measures.
  • Ask for the grant and your contribution as separate lines.
  • Keep the written offer, deadlines and installer evidence.

Our funding-route finder directs you to the relevant official pages. It does not issue a funding decision.

Published information supports your research. Your installer should confirm the exact product, suitability, scope and terms for your property.
